Why You Should Write a Business Blog for Your Website

Before we dive into how to write a business blog, let’s talk a little more about why you should write a blog for your business.

  1. Blogs drive traffic to your website

First and foremost, blogs are significant drivers of website traffic. Research shows that websites with blogs generate as much as 2,000% more traffic than websites without blogs. That’s a crazy amount of traffic!

  2. Blogs start conversations with your future customers

Of course, getting people to your website is only part of the battle. Once they land there, blogs can start conversations with readers who will hopefully turn into customers. This can only happen if your blogs are thoughtfully written for your target audience. They can’t be overly salesy or full of fluff.

  3. Blogs give you credibility and elevate your status in the industry

When you have multiple blog posts ranking for high-volume searches, your name becomes known in your niche. People will start thinking of you as an authority on the subject, even if they don’t read all of the articles you produce. Plus, you can repurpose blogs by posting them on social media, turning them into eBooks or webinars, or transforming them into videos.

5 Tips to Start Writing a Business Blog

These five tips can help you start writing a business blog that generates traffic and leads.

  1. Know your audience

Or, at least, have very reasonable assumptions about your audience. When you first start writing a business blog, you may not know exactly who your audience is, and that’s OK! But you should have it narrowed down. This might mean you have more than one audience.

For example, at People First Content, we want our primary audience to be business owners – you know, potential clients. This audience is people who recognize the value of content and want to work with writers who can manage their blog.

As we have tracked our data, though, we’ve come to realize that business owners aren’t the only ones reading and engaging with our content. We’re also reaching other content creators who are searching for advice about how to write content successfully.

So, you’ll notice that our blog posts vary somewhat as far as who we are targeting. The general audience is anyone interested in learning more about writing content. But some articles (like this one) are more targeted toward business owners who are just starting a blog, while others (like this one) are more geared towards other content creators looking for useful information to help them with their craft.

  2. Write about what you know

Writing is a lot easier when you are familiar with the topic. Along with being easier for you to write, your articles will be a lot more engaging and entertaining when you know what you’re talking about!

Your blog posts don’t need to be strictly about your company or its services. You can talk about anything that’s relevant to your industry that readers will find educational and/or entertaining. Be authentic, and avoid using jargon or language that is difficult to understand. Clear and concise wins every time.

  3. Focus on your reader, not yourself

Keep the focus on your reader instead of talking about yourself and how amazing your brand is. By writing high-quality blog posts, your readers will come to trust you as a credible source. Your writing will do the selling for you, even when you aren’t writing about your business.

  4. Use visuals

Adding visual content to your blogs is an excellent way to keep readers engaged. We’ve even written a blog post about it!

You can repurpose visuals on social media, which can help your post stand out among the thousands of other posts your audience is scrolling through on their feeds.

  5. Be consistent

You don’t necessarily have to post every day to benefit from blogging (although it can certainly help). But you do need to be consistent. Weekly blog posts are great. They keep your content fresh and remind search engines that you are putting out new information. Plus, they keep readers informed about your industry.

Bonus tip: Give people something they can use right away

Finally, make sure every blog post gives readers an action item that they can do as soon as they finish reading your article. It could be to sign up for your newsletter, schedule a call with your team, or read an article on a related topic. You don’t want readers to think “now what?” when they get to the end of your article.
